Starting work
Travel to your place of employment
Students must arrange their own transportation to their place of employment following the orientation seminar. Your job offer will contain the address of your employer. They can also help you in finding your way there. The German transit system is reliable, efficient, and affordable, and the main mode of transportation in Germany. Transit information can be found on the national train website at http://www.bahn.de. Check out the schedule and cost of the ticket before you leave Canada. The WSP-Director will also be able to assist you. If your work is in a smaller town, your employer might be able to pick you up from the nearest train station if you let them know when you will arrive.
The Work Contract
The work contract that you receive from the WSP office/the ZAV is not an official contract. According to German law contracts can also be done orally. However, it is advisable to set up a written contract with your employer after you arrive stating how many hours you will work per day/ week, how much money you will earn, and any other important details you would like to add.
For general questions regarding German employment law please contact the citizen’s helpline of the Federal Ministry for Work at +49- (0) 180 – 5 67 67 13.
Anmelden und Abmelden (Register and De-register at Municipality of Your Work)
Once you arrived at your place of employment you have 8 days to register (anmelden) at the municipality you will live in. It does not cost anything and your employer should be able to advise you on where to go and what to bring.
Remember to de-register (abmelden) once you leave Germany.
