The Visa
If you are staying in Germany for more than 3 months, you will have to obtain a visa.
The work term does not extend beyond 3 months, but some students may wish to spend extra time in Germany to travel. Some students, depending on their country of origin, may also have to obtain a visa. All students should find out if they require visas as soon as possible and to apply for them, as they may not have enough time to apply between the time they are offered positions, and the actual start of employment.
If you are staying in Germany for more than 3 months, you will have to obtain a visa. Canadian students can apply for a visa after arriving in Germany. The Youth Mobility Agreement between Germany and Canada allows Canadian citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 to live and work in Germany for up to twelve months. Applicants have to prove that they hold comprehensive liability and health insurance coverage valid for the duration of their stay, especially for health care. Furthermore, applicants must prove that they have the financial resources necessary to support themselves. Obtaining a Visa in Germany – Three Easy Steps
1. Register with the city at the Ortsamt, which costs €6. In return, you get a confirmation of registration.
2. Go to the Ausländerabteilung, with the following documentation: passport, registration with city, Arbeitserlaubnis and confirmation of health insurance. Explain you need a visa, and they will book you ![]()
an appointment – mine was scheduled for 2 weeks later.
3. Return for your appointment, remembering to bring the same documentation as before, along with a photo of yourself. You will need to pay a €30 processing fee, but you receive your visa before you leave.
