Withdrawal, quitting or getting fired
If at any time you want to withdraw from the program after accepting a job offer you need to contact the WSP office, your employer and the ZAV immediately. You can email, phone or fax them (the contact information of your employer is on the job offer). Contacting us as soon as possible insures that your job will be offered to other students who might still be waiting for an offer.
Remember that if you withdraw from the program you will not get any refund of fees you paid already and you will not be eligible for a subsidy.
Employee-Employer Relations
I feel that I’m being taken advantage of and treated badly my employer. What can I do?
People interact differently with each other in Germany, especially in the work place. They seem sterner, less friendly and more authoritarian than in Canada. Try to get used to this new climate and adjust to it. When people get to know you, they will warm up.
However, if you feel that there is a real problem, such as being excessively overworked, not being paid according to your contract, or if you are being abused, contact the ZAV immediately. In any other cases you should try to talk to your employer and settle the issues between yourselves. The ZAV deals with thousands of students and can only help you if you are in real difficulties.
Being fired or quitting from a job
If you want to quit your job for a good reason notify your employer immediately. You will also have to write a letter of resignation to your employer and give them enough time before you leave. Ask your employer how long that is. If you leave right away or without giving enough notice they might deduct some of your pay as they rely on your work and might have difficulties finding someone else instead.
If you are fired for a good reason or if you quit your job for a good reason the ZAV might be able to help you find another job. However, it depends on what is available at the time and there are no guarantees that you will get another job. Other jobs might be in a different area (hotel, agriculture, office work) and even a different city.
The best would be to find a job on your own. If you do, your new employer needs to contact the ZAV to fill in a form. Only then are you legally allowed to work in Germany.
